Work Shadow Opportunities

The St Just Ordinalia company has up to 20 work shadow opportunities in connection with its September 2021 productions of the three medieval miracle plays (Ordinalia). 

Placements will take place during July and August 2021. These will be open to people over 16, and we expect to appeal most to school pupils and undergraduates of all abilities and interests.


Placements will be for a period of one week, or the equivalent of a week, with the opportunity to work shadow another role for a further week equivalent.

Placements will give students the opportunity to:

  • apply existing knowledge and skills in a work setting
  • increase skills and competencies
  • obtain an insight into the way organisations operate and the challenges they face
  • understand how the arts and entertainment sector works
  • clarify eventual career goals.


Opportunities are with:
Artistic Director (AD) - whose role is to oversee all aspects of the mounting of the three Ordinalia plays in the production, and is also responsible for the direction of one play. He chooses the Production team, approves the scripts and music scores, sets the brief for the design of sets and costumes, and manages the production budget.

Co- Directors There are 2 Co-Directors, who are responsible for the smooth running of the plays assigned to them by AD. They attend all rehearsals and production meetings of that play, stand in for AD when necessary, and host drama training workshops to encourage local participation.

Producer - whose role is to manage the overall financial and managerial functions of the three Ordinalia productions, ensuring they run on time and to budget, and to deal with all contingencies as they arise. The Producer is also responsible for hiring personnel and contractors for creative positions, and managing the Production Team - as well as organising and securing rehearsal space venues.

Assistant Directors. There are 3 Assistant Directors, whose role is to schedule, timetable and attend all production meetings and rehearsals . They prepare the agendas, allocate the actions and ensure they are carried out fully. They must also ensure correct and up-to-date scripts and scores are available to the cast, choir and musicians.

Project Manager - who role is to prepare and manage a detailed project plan including individual work streams for the Project Team. He manages the finances and the risks the production might face. He prepares all the contracts needed for the Production Team, with the technical crew, and with other suppliers. He is in charge of all arrangements with funders, and VAT and accounting.

Festival Organiser - whose role is to devise and develop a programme of activities for the Ordinalia Festival; devise and manage Plen an Gwari and St Just Town trail Tours, and provide training for the volunteer guides. The festival Organiser will also identify participants for, organise and oversee Cornish language workshops and the Ordinalia Festival Event; develop and maintain contact with local accommodation and catering/refreshment providers; and greet ticket holders and resolve their queries.

Production Manager - whose role is to hire, supervise and motivate crew and volunteers. The Production Manager will also draw up production plans for each show, and be responsible for the technical elements of the plays being completed safely, on time and to budget; monitor the standard of production and ensure they meet the expectations of an ambitious community project of high quality and drama; and assume responsibility for all aspects of Health & Safety and Safeguarding.

Stage Manager - whose role is to attend final rehearsals and production meetings, and supervise get-in and get-out of all technical crew. The Stage Manager also coordinates, supervises, and facilitates the smooth running of the operations of sound and lighting technicians, props and costumes; communicates Directors’ wishes to crews; attends and oversees all shows; and calls cues, and assist actors’ entrances.

Music Director 1 - whose role is to to finalise the scores, and musical arrangements,  and assume overall responsibility the choir for the Ordinalia Productions. The Music Director will also host music training workshops, participate in auditions and select the choir; schedule and attend rehearsals and pre-show warm ups; teach and coach singing to the orchestra/band and conduct live performances and direct the music.

Music Director 2 -  whose role is to assume overall responsibility the orchestra/band for the Ordinalia Productions. The Music Director will also host music training workshops, participate in auditions and select the musicians for the orchestra/band; schedule and attend rehearsals and pre-show warm ups; teach and coach music to the orchestra/band and conduct live performances and direct the music.

Costume Makers - whose role is to prepare costumes according to specified designs and produce all the costumes required by all the actors and choir in performances of all three Ordinalia plays. They will also undertake all costume repairs required before, during and after performances, and subsequent cleaning, bagging and long-term storage.

Set Makers - whose role is to whose role is to prepare sets and props according to specified designs and produce all the sets, stages and props for all three Ordinalia plays. They will also undertake all removal and installation of sets on site, repairs and maintenance required before, during and after performances, and subsequent demounting, transportation and long-term storage.

Administration - whose role is to take and circulate notes of all in person and online production meetings; co-ordinate meeting schedules, and liaise between production groups; print scripts and music; source information, and deal with assigned correspondence; scan documents, electronic filing and archiving.

       skills interest: computer skills; communication; efficiency and attention to detail; proof reading ; delegation

For our part, we will ensure each work shadow student is:

  • assigned someone as a main Point of Contact, to encourage good and clear communication
  • introduced to other members of the team and relevant procedures are explained
  • provided with fair, honest, timely and constructive feedback, in the course of the placement
  • not subject to any bullying and harassment
  • in a safe working environment
  • given adequate opportunities for rest, meals and refreshments.
  • provided with meaningful opportunities to learn new skills
  • able to access to appropriate sources of advice and support
  • assured his or her personal information is obtained and stored lawfully

All we ask in return is that you are expected, and agree, to:

  • come to all agreed work placement days prepared and on time
  • always be respectful of the production team and fellow company members
  • ask the Producer if extra help is needed
  • not miss more than 2 work placement days, except through illness or necessary isolation
  • perform the tasks assigned to the best of their abilities
  • pitch in when help is needed to assist and promote the Ordinalia 2021 project
  • be photographed and filmed as part of the documentary process for the Ordinalia productions
  • have fun


Complaints about anything occurring during placement should be raised this with the assigned Point of Contact or the Producer. Every effort will be made to ensure complaints are dealt with fairly, sympathetically, confidentially and promptly, and that the complainant is always treated with respect.
